Instrument Scientist (f/m/d)

• contribute to and participate in internal research projects at X-ray free-electron lasers and synchrotrons, interact with international collaborations and user consortia
• take part in the operation of the HED instrument, support HED instrument scientists in running user experiments, including shift work
• plan and perform R&D on methods and applications specific to HED, such as laser- and DAC-based compression techniques, high‑pressure phenomena, or femtosecond optical/​x-ray laser matter interaction, relativistic laser-plasma science, or pulsed strong magnetic fields.
• support and advise user groups in preparing and running their experiments

• a PhD degree in experimental physics or equivalent
• expertise areas relevant to HED-HIBEF at the European XFEL, such as laser-driven shocks, diamond anvil cells, high-pressure phenomena, warm dense matter or relativistic laser-plasma science.
• knowledge on relevant X-ray techniques, such as synchrotron, laser, or XFEL-based spectroscopy, scattering, diffraction or X-ray imaging – knowledge of optical diagnostics (such as VISAR, SOP) is an asset.
• passionate about working on cutting edge creative science in a competent working environment
• readiness for shift work and user support at a large-scale research facility
• excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multilingual, multidisciplinary team with good written and oral English skills
• a structured and self-reliant work mode
